ABSTRACT
This project aims at examining various government policies and theireffects on the survival and growth of small and medium scale enterprises(SMEs). It is crucial for us to understand and appreciate what constitute asmall or medium scale enterprise, what factors militate against theirsurvival and growth, and the proliferation for which government policieshave been formulated to address. The study intends to examineconstraints encountered by small and medium scale industries as thefederal government continues to lay emphasis on self-relianceindustrialization through the encouragement of small and medium scaleindustrial development New lending schemes and credit institution at both
local and federal levels has been established to encourage thedevelopment of small and medium scale businesses and they include thenational economic reconstruction fund (NERFUND), the national,Directorate of Community Bank and other Development Bank of Nigeria,Bank of Agriculture, Bank of Industry, Nigeria Industrial DevelopmentBank (NIDB), Nigeria Bank for Commerce and Industry Small and MediumIndustries Equity Investment Scheme.
